Perspective

A way of representing a situation that changes which relationships become salient.

Direct answer

A perspective is a way of interpreting or organizing a situation. Because representations foreground some relationships and background others, perspective can change what a person notices without changing the external facts themselves.

How it works

  1. 01

Frames select dimensions, boundaries, causal stories, and comparison classes.

  2. 02

Changing representation can expose variables or actions that were absent from the initial model.

  3. 03

Perspective-taking can also include attempting to model how another person perceives the same situation.

Why it matters

  1. 01

The visible action set depends partly on the model generating it.

  2. 02

This is the starting mechanism behind Perspective Expansion.
