Metacognition
Awareness and regulation of one's own cognitive processes.
Metacognition is awareness of one's own thinking and, often, deliberate attempts to monitor or control that thinking.
Mechanism
How it works
- 01
A person can represent not only a problem but their own confidence, strategy, uncertainty, and cognitive state.
- 02
Monitoring can reveal when the current approach is failing.
- 03
Control processes can then change strategy, seek information, defer judgment, or reframe the problem.
Consequence
Why it matters
- 01
Metacognition is one of the bridges between cognition and cognitive sovereignty.
- 02
It creates the possibility of changing how a mind is operating while it operates.
