CWI + PRS

Behavioral corridors, psychologically permitted action space, and the frontier that moves when the crowd proves a possibility.

Formalized by John Brajer. The expansion of the acronym CWI is intentionally left undefined in v0.1.

Core claim

A person can possess far more available actions than they psychologically treat as selectable. CWI models the gap between what can actually be done and what an individual currently permits themselves to consider doing.

People often operate inside a behavioral corridor: a socially and psychologically legible range of actions that feels normal enough, survivable enough, or permitted enough to choose. The corridor can expand when somebody demonstrates an action that previously sat outside it.

Three nested action spaces

Actual action space A(t)

Actions that are materially available under the person's real constraints at time t.

Recognized action space R(t)

The subset of A(t) the person can currently imagine, identify, or recognize as real possibilities.

Behavioral corridor B(t)

The subset of R(t) the person psychologically permits themselves to choose from.

CWI focuses on the gap: B(t) ⊆ R(t) ⊆ A(t).

PRS

PRS is the three-variable lens used to evaluate an unconventional move as its social meaning changes.

Possibility

“Can a human even do this?” Observed success can move an action from unimaginable to conceivable.

Risk perception

“What happens to people who try?” Wins, failures, losses, survivals, and near-misses update the perceived downside distribution.

Status payoff

“If I succeed, how extraordinary will society consider it?” The payoff is usually highest while success is rare and declines as the action becomes common.

The frontier lifecycle

  1. Unrecognized frontier. An action exists outside most people's behavioral corridor. Possibility is uncertain; risk is opaque; status payoff may be enormous.
  2. First proof. Someone succeeds. The action becomes conceivable to observers even if it has not become safe.
  3. Risk discovery. More people try. Successes and failures reveal a distribution of consequences.
  4. Social permission. Repetition makes the action more legible and easier to justify. The behavioral corridor expands.
  5. Normalization. Participation rises. Possibility is high, uncertainty is lower, and status payoff compresses because the act no longer distinguishes as strongly.
  6. Frontier displacement. Attention moves toward a harder, stranger, or newly reachable adjacent action.

Gator → Shark frontier loop

“Gator” is the visible behavior or opportunity everybody is beginning to jump on. “Shark” is an adjacent possibility that becomes newly reachable, valuable, or visible because Gator adoption changed the environment. These are metaphor labels, not literal instructions.

A crowded Gator is therefore not only evidence that an opportunity is saturating. It is information about what the crowd just created: infrastructure, skills, tools, distribution, norms, audiences, data, complementary demand, lowered costs, or new expectations.

Frontier-navigation sequence

Observe Gator → identify what mass adoption changed → enumerate adjacent Sharks → evaluate each with PRS → move while the Shark remains under-recognized → watch for normalization → repeat.

The asymmetry matters: the first person at a completely unknown frontier may receive huge differentiation but also maximum uncertainty. An adjacent Shark can inherit infrastructure and knowledge from the mature Gator while still offering high differentiation. That creates a potentially favorable frontier position: less uncertainty than the original pioneer, without waiting until the new opportunity becomes obvious.

Social-media application

A low-status participant can sometimes act more freely because they perceive less existing status to protect. Someone with few followers and a bad current situation may think “it cannot get much worse,” post repeatedly, experiment, collect feedback, and create more attempts. Someone with a larger audience may become perfectionistic, protect an existing identity, and reduce their rate of experimentation.

CWI does not claim that objective constraints disappear. It isolates a different variable: current status is not a complete measure of the actions available from the current state, and psychologically permitted action space can be much smaller than materially available action space.

Testable predictions

  1. Exposure to successful unconventional actions should increase the number of similar actions observers report as personally conceivable, even when their objective resources have not changed.
  2. Observed failures should alter adoption primarily through risk perception, while repeated successes should increase perceived possibility and social permission.
  3. As an unconventional action becomes common, its perceived status payoff should tend to decline even if the action's technical difficulty remains constant.
  4. Rapid adoption of one behavior should increase the rate at which complementary or adjacent opportunities become visible and commercially or socially viable.
  5. People with less perceived status to protect may, in some contexts, take more frequent unconventional attempts than people who are protecting a more established position.

Canonical record

CWI v0.1 and PRS were formalized by John Brajer on September 11, 2026 from an analysis of hierarchy, free will, social proof, risk, status, and frontier movement. PRS is nested within CWI in this version. The Gator → Shark loop is the frontier-adjacency application of the same mechanism.
